This month UMatters editor Dr. Sam Schwartz hosts Dr. Sydney Freeman Jr., the first African-American male to become a full professor at the University of Idaho (at age 36 no less) about how universities can rebuild trust and strengthen leadership in a time of rapid change.

Dr. Freeman, whose scholarship is in higher education as a field of study, shares his journey from student activism to academic leadership and reflects on how higher education can better serve students, faculty, and communities amid political, economic, and technological pressures. The conversation explores values-based leadership, shared governance, board responsibility, and the impact of AI on the future of learning.
